Vioxx is a popular anti-inflammatory medication introduced to the U.S. market in 1999, and used to be prescribed to ease the pain, swelling and other symptoms of osteoarthritis. Before drug maker Merck & Co. withdrew it from the worldwide market September 30, 2004, it was most commonly given to patients with Osteoarthritis. Vioxx belongs to a class of medications known as cyclooxygenase-2, or COX-2, inhibitors. Sales topped $2.55 billion in 2003.
Vioxx side effects may include, but are not limited to, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, upper respiratory tract infection, swelling of the lower extremities (legs and/or feet), high blood pressure, itching, stomach ulcers or bleeding, fatigue, vomiting, dark urine, and black stools.
In addition to increasing risk of heart attack and stroke, patients taking Vioxx were found to be four times more likely to suffer from heart attack than those taking Naproxen (Aleve). Vioxx is more likely to cause severe intestinal damage, ulcerations and bleeding, blood clots and toxic epidermal necrolysis (a fatal skin disease), than other arthritis pain relievers.

Celebrex is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID) that is used to reduce pain and inflammation (swelling and soreness).
Celebrex and other NSAID medicines can cause stomach ulcers that bleed. The chance of this serious problem increases the longer you take Celebrex and with higher doses of Celebrex. Stomach bleeding can also happen suddenly while you take Celebrex. Stop taking Celebrex and call your healthcare provider right away if you get:

- black bowel movements that look like tar

Celebrex and other NSAID medicines can cause serious allergic reactions that include swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. These allergic reactions may cause problems with breathing, swallowing, and wheezing. Serious allergic skin reactions have also happened.
Bextra (valdecoxib) is in a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Valdecoxib works by reducing substances in the body that cause inflammation, pain, and fever, and
is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis.
Bextra’s label already warns against serious skin reactions as a possible side effect, and some trials found an increased risk of unspecified “cardiovascular events” in Bextra patients who had cardiac bypass surgery.
Prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Bextra (valdecoxib) are
one of the leading classes of drugs that cause Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal
necrolysis (TEN), and erythema multiforme (EM) due to drug allergy reactions. Bextra has also
been linked to possible cardiac problems including heart attacks and strokes.
In October 2004, Pfizer announced that two clinical trials showed heart
bypass surgery patients taking Bextra increased their risk of stroke and heart
attack. The news came just weeks after the FDA withdrew Vioxx, a similar COX-2
inhibitor, from the market due to an increased risk of cardiovascular events.
Avandia, An article released Monday by the New England Journal
of Medicine raised safety questions about the widely used diabetes
pill Avandia. An analysis of clinical trials concluded that the
drug might significantly increase the risk of heart attacks.

Arava, a drug for treating rheumatoid arthritis, is linked to
130 confirmed cases of severe liver toxicity and at least 20 cases
of death.
Baycol, marketed to help lower cholesterol, is now reportedly
responsible for kidney damage or failure. It was recalled in 2001.
Fen-Phen was advertised as a weight loss plan we could live
with, until resultant heart valve disease and pulmonary hypertension
cases deaths began making headlines.
Gardasil / HPV Vaccine - In 2006, the US Food &
Drug Administration (FDA) approved Gardasil, the first vaccine
developed to prevent cervical cancer, precancerous genital lesions
and genital warts due to human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16
and 18. Documents show that serious side effects and deaths have

Meridia, a prescription weight loss drug, is now linked to
heart damage and heart failure.
Phenylpropanolamine is an ingredient in many prescription and
over the counter (OTC) drugs. (It is primarily used in cold remedies
and weight loss products). Now it is reportedly the cause of
hemorrhagic strokes.
Prempro, a hormone combination drug, was prescribed to many
women as a preventative medication. Now, studies show that heart
problems and some cancers re associated with its use.
Propulsid, used for nighttime heartburn relief, is now
believed to be responsible for serious heart rhythm disorders,
cardiac arrest, and sudden death.
Rezulin, prescribed for Type II Diabetes, has been found to
damage the liver. This can be life threatening.
Serzone, an antidepressant, has been linked to liver failure
leading to death or necessary transplants at 3 to 4 times the normal
expected rates.
